Our mission

Our MissionThe aims of the Newcastle Mandarin Chinese School are to advance the education of Chinese culture and language to the public and the local community. Although most of the children are primarily of Chinese ethnic origin, the school also welcome children from other cultural backgrounds. The School teaches Mandarin Chinese language (in simplified characters), where the pupils can achieve different levels of abilities to speak, read and write the official Chinese language. The school also equally emphasises the importance of traditional and contemporary Chinese cultures, so that the pupils have a better understanding of the language, and how and why it is used.

Opening Time

The School runs on Saturdays during term time only. It consists of two-hour language tuition, between 14:00 to 16:00. There is usually a 15 minute break between the two hours. Pupils and teachers are kindly asked to be in school 15 minutes before the tuition starts. All lessons are held at the Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School.

Teachers

All teachers are interviewed by committee members and are CRB checked. Normally, teachers will stay with the same group throughout the academic year.

We welcome individuals who would like to be teachers. All teachers are volunteers, but travel expenses are covered. For further details, please contact our recruitment officer:

Parents

Parents are expected to help out in the classroom on a rota basis. this will involve tidying up after class and to ensure the classroom is in its original state before leaving.

Admissions

AdmissionsThe children are grouped according to their levels of proficiency in Mandarin rather than their age. To ensure effective teaching and learning, all class sizes are small, usually with no more than 12 pupils in each class. New members usually join the school at the beginning of the academic year (September) and no later than the end of Autumn Half Term. We offer a trial session to new members.

To apply, please contact the School Secretay via email: enquiries@newcastlemandarin.org.uk to arrange for a visit. You would need to fill in the enrolement form (see downloads) and to bring it along on your visit. There will be an administrative fee of £3.00 for each application.

School Management

ManagementThe School is managed by a committee of parent members. This School committee is elected biennially and consists of Headteacher, Treasurer, Secretary and a small group of parent representatives. The committee is formed to ensure the smooth running of the school. The Headteacher is elected by parents through voting. Every parent is a member of the school and has the right to vote for the appointment of the Headteacher. The management team is guided by the Constitution of the school and holds regular meetings (4-6 times a year) to review the school’s performance and make recommendations for future planning. In addition, there are teachers’ meetings, parents’ meetings, as well as an Annual General Meeting. The committee conducts an annual questionnaire survey amongst parents. Thus, the quality of management can be monitored and improved. Recent surveys have indicated that parents are “very happy” with the school overall.

Finance

The appointed School Treasurer deals with the school’s financial matters. The committee reviews tuition fees annually and new fees are normally introduced at the beginning of the academic year (September). The fees for the full term will be collected in advance at the beginning of the term.
